The game is generally known as boules, and as pétanque whenever it is to be taken seriously as a competitive sport. The same game is called boccia in Italy, which is where it originally comes from. Individually or in teams, the players attempt to throw or roll their balls as close to the target ball - the »jack«- as possible.

The ‘racquet’ is a tambourine-like object, the ball – of hardened rubber – weighs 80 g and can reach a velocity of 250 kph. and the ‘field’ is over 80 m long. ‘Tamburello’ is a game practically unknown outside Italy, and is, to be honest, rather dangerous. However, if one removes the hard rubber ball and substitutes for it the soft variety (see illustration), one has a fascinating holiday game with wide appeal. First of all, we’d like to describe the Tamburello racquet. This, ‘tuned’ as it is to a tension of 2000 kg (by comparison, a tennis racquet has a tension of about 25 kg), gives you an incredibly dynamic feeling when you hit the ball – and also makes a musical sound thanks to its special coating! You can hit the ball to and fro at lightning speed, but at the same time if you wish (we recommend this for beginners in an case) you can play a more defensive game or simply use a slower ball – a shuttlecock for example or a Brazilian peteca.

For dynamic people - badminton rackets made from grass.
“Valuable wooden racquets have obviously ceased to exist,” or at least so we said once in our summer catalogue supplement (speaking of badminton rackets). And presumably we have told you the truth; the classic ash wood badminton racket had been lost at the time. What we did not know then (and have unwittingly peculated) was that in East Asia - where badminton comes from - rackets are made from a material even better suited for the purpose: bamboo, or grass, so to speak.

Bamboo with its outstanding bending strength is a material virtually predestined for a career as a badminton racquet; even more surprising that racquets of this kind are practically not in the market anymore (only in the U.S. did we find Chinese bamboo rackets for an incredible 4 $). Our racquets come from Taiwan and are significantly more expensive –but of such quality that our buyers who were to test the bamboo racquets found playing with a cheap standard set of badminton racquets a veritable punishment.

Instead of a garden party: a croquet tournament.

A croquet set from France, where this sport, subsequently so popular with the English gentry, originated; made by a manufacturer who has specialised in such high-class and high-quality sports equipment since the middle of 19th century.
