Manufactum 1930 Vintage Tomato Knife

product evaluations

A Throwback to The 30´s: the Tomato Knife. This knife is the sort of special article that hits the eye when you glance through pre-war-steel-ware catalogues. We found it in a 1931 Stukenbrok catalogue, where the unusual-looking saw tooth cutting edge is said to be able to cut tomatoes and similar fruits with one slice and without losing any juice. We asked Herder to reconstruct it for us – a firm based Solingen, famous throughout Germany for its brave stand against automation and with a passion for the conservation and further development of the traditional – and highly varied – techniques of knife-blade design and fitting. These involved among other things a revival of the so-called ‘wire-removal’ method. The final result is a knife that can cut tomatoes, paprika and all other fruits and vegetables that are soft inside but covered with a resistant skin. With one effortless slice you can cut these through without squashing or spoiling the fruit inside. Cherry-wood handle, stainless steel blade. Length of blade 12 cm, length with handle 21.5 cm. Weight 50 g.
