100% pure worsted wool yarn. Fully fashioned.
The Guernsey sweater is knitted from hard spun 31.5 - 32.5 micron worsted wool yarn and knitted with close stitches in 6-gauge. This makes it strong and slightly rough but at the same time extremely durable, wind-proof and warm. The characteristic patterns of the Guernsey sweater have been handed down from generation to generation. The designs are intended to reflect the everyday life of the fishermen. Thus, rib at the top of the sleeve represents a ship's rope ladder, the raised seam across the shoulder stands for a rope and the garter stitch panel the waves on the shore. The other special knitting features in the design are for the purpose of producing a practical, everyday sweater which is made to last. They include:
- the garter stitch welt, which is finished with a »Channel Island casting on«, strengthened by the double yarn;
- a slit hem to allow for greater freedom of movement;
- triangular gussets knitted into the crew neck at the side to prevent tearing when the sweater is being pulled on and off; they also give the collar a better finish;
- sleeves tailored to provide a close fit, enabling the sweater to be worn under jackets; triangular gussets here too make it easier to put on;
- identical fronts and backs, so the sweater can be worn either way, thus preventing wear on just one side.
Standard care involves merely giving the sweater a good shake and airing it in the damp morning air. The worsted wool yarn of the Guernsey sweater contains natural lanolin that is not washed out during the knitting process. Guernseys therefore will, by their very nature, weather well.
If washing is absolutely necessary we recommend hand-washing or machine washing on the wool cycle (max. 30°C). Turn the sweater inside out before washing.
Be careful how much detergent you use; too much detergent will remove the lanolin from the wool.
