The complaint that »they just dont make 'em like that any more...« might be valid regarding many products that one or two generations back could still be taken for granted.
But we have tried to do more than just complaining: Manufactum are reproducing a number of items and revitalising traditional, labour-intensive methods of manufacturing.
For example: we are not going to moan about the truly lamentable state of European leather manufacturing; instead we are putting energy and resources into finding producers and convincing them that it is worth their while to remember their own quality standards and procedures. To give you a small example of these efforts, we have chosen a few leather goods to present to you. High quality English and Scottish leather, vegetable-tanned, treated with wood tar and train oil. The open seams are sealed with a hot iron, the handles are from the same leather and double-strenght. The briefcases' locks are nickel-plated brass outside and galvanised steel inside. They do still make 'em like that, after all...
This folding briefcase is for documents or sheet music - some used to have additional loops so that they could be tied to a bicycle. When a courier had delivered his documents, he could fold up the briefcase like a newspaper and carry it under his arm.
