The hide used for this bag is almost 3 mm thick and is stitched by hand; the leather has been vegetable tanned and dyed black. The bag's construction is such that it can be comfortably carried in any position (useful for the cycling postman or -woman who may encounter the odd belligerent dog). Hence the 2.3 cm wide and 125 cm long shoulder strap is not attached directly to the body of the bag, but suspended from two metal rings on the back. This also ensures that the bag stays close to the body and does not swing around. The strap can be adjusted to seven different lengths, for the comfort of the individual wearer. Vegetable tanned saddle-stitched cowhide with a sewn-on pen loop. Two solid steel clasps for fastening the bag and adjusting the length of the strap. Width 29 cm, height 23 cm, depth 6,5 cm. Weight 665 g.
Once upon a time bags like this were used by postmen and -women for delivering special mail (telegrams, registered letters, etc.) and were exposed to the elements on a daily basis. The singular, clearly-defined purpose of these bags resulted in a minimalist design which has enhanced their appeal. The prolonged daily use of these bags, even in adverse weather conditions, also meant the imposition of stringent criteria on the selection of material and processing.
