The light of an LED lamp is not created electrically (by heating up a wire) but is emanated by semiconductor elements as tiny as a couple hundred micrometers. These light diodes are for the most part shock- and temperature-resistant and – don't create heat, – hardly need any energy, – make a clean white light, – are blessed with a biblical longevity. Not very long ago, their power was limited to 0,12 watt, and could only be enhanced by using more semiconductor parts. Now, there are 1 watt LEDs that create a stronger and more homogenous light than their weaker predecessors. Here comes a representative of the first generation which differs in performance as well as in price. It is produced in Remscheid, Germany, has a solid encasement made of airplane aluminium and is fuelled by lithium batteries that, contrary to the conventional ones, lose only 1% of their power per year and thus work for a very long time.
With a 0,12 watt LED powered by a lithium battery: equals a burning time of 400 hours. Taking into account the small percent of discharge, this torch is so to speak operational for ever.
