A slightly smaller model for smaller hands (for children of 8 and over): frame of white ABS plastic, nylon striking surface (strung to about 1400 kg), without the special coating and therefore without the characteristic ‘Tamburello’ sound. Stretch leather hand-loop. 26 cm diameter, height 5 cm. Weight 325 g.
The ‘racquet’ is a tambourine-like object, the ball – of hardened rubber – weighs 80 g and can reach a velocity of 250 kph. and the ‘field’ is over 80 m long. ‘Tamburello’ is a game practically unknown outside Italy, and is, to be honest, rather dangerous. However, if one removes the hard rubber ball and substitutes for it the soft variety (see illustration), one has a fascinating holiday game with wide appeal. First of all, we’d like to describe the Tamburello racquet. This, ‘tuned’ as it is to a tension of 2000 kg (by comparison, a tennis racquet has a tension of about 25 kg), gives you an incredibly dynamic feeling when you hit the ball – and also makes a musical sound thanks to its special coating! You can hit the ball to and fro at lightning speed, but at the same time if you wish (we recommend this for beginners in an case) you can play a more defensive game or simply use a slower ball – a shuttlecock for example or a Brazilian peteca.
It is possible to have the racquet ‘restrung’, though this is not necessary so long as you take care to avoid contact with sharp objects.
