A new model from the Rimowa Manufactum edition – a compact yet roomy pilot's case, made of aluminium to combine lightness and stability. It has plenty of room for work papers and clothes for short trips and – of course, as we'd have to change the name otherwise – it can be taken as cabin luggage. Perhaps its biggest plus is its lightness and wheelability. Packed up and pulled along behind, it will give you a pleasant surprise with its ease and smoothness of movement. The travellers we've asked here emphasized its stability and sturdiness, for example in the rain. Another plus – it's comfortable to sit on, should you have the bad luck not to find a seat at the airport.

This Manufactum-Rimowa edition is based on “Topas”, a product first launched by Rimowa as early as 1950. For our special edition, we had the beautiful details from its first decade reconstructed: handles made of cowhide, combination locks of pure metal (without the plastic coverings of today), polished corner reinforcements and a lining of black, Rimowa-branded viscose. The details are not only beautiful – they also save you trouble when it comes to recognizing your luggage at the conveyor belt, as they make the suitcase quite unique. Apart from that, the suitcases are especially remarkable because of the light and robust aluminium hide that has been the trademark of Rimowa and especially the “Topas” range for 70 years. Since 1957, the material of choice is thick airplane aluminium, strengthened even more by the typical Rimowa grooves. The interior is fitted with lashing straps and two small bags closed with an elastic band for stashing small objects at the sides of the base. There is a net zippered at two sides and tightened across a bent plastic tube that keeps the clothes stored in the lid in place and can also take small pieces of clothing. You get a five-year warranty. Possible repairs can still be done after decades.
