Westphalian Quality Upholstery by Sinn.
Sinn Upholstery, founded in Stemwede, Westphalia, in 1967, decided a quarter of a century ago to focus on quality instead of quantity. They concentrate on individual furniture that hardly anyone could surpass in terms of outstanding constructions and superior materials from the outset. Deliberately, Sinn decided to set their range of products apart from the ubiquitous fashionable “seasonal goods” designed for no more than a few years of use. The decision has proven to be absolutely right for the upholstery company. Sinn has a stable private customer base and an excellent reputation with corporate clients. When clients, for example from shipbuilding and aircraft construction, ask for upholstered furniture for the most intensive use, Sinn designs seating according to their requirements. Thus, the adherence to traditionally executed crafts (and even more so: continuously passing on approved techniques to younger generations of employees) has put the company on a solid footing for the long term.
The Wooden Basis.
Upholstery is a craft that hides a significant part of its accomplishments under covers. As a result, if you want to measure the effort required to create seating furniture of outstanding quality, you have to look at the manufacturing process. At Sinn’s, they choose as the basis of an upholstered piece of furniture an inner frame expertly made of beech wood and plywood by a wheelwright. The frame features dowelled corner joints and rounded edges to protect upholstery and cover fabrics. Sinn has the furniture’s feet made of solid, oiled oak; they come with plastic glides (find additional felt glides enclosed in the delivery to protect parquet floors and other sensitive surfaces). In terms of its statics, a piece of furniture with such a base is equipped for a future as an antique.
Step by Step to the Right Shape. The Spring Core.
The upholsterer builds his work in layers on this frame. Undeniably, it takes skill and experience to bring a piece of seating furniture to shape; it’s a process resulting in the intended form and fancied seating quality from the interplay of the now following work steps. First, sinuous wire springs made of hardened steel are clamped in place and covered with a felt insert to dampen noise. The shaping of the seat starts with attaching springs with a core made of copper-plated spring steel wire to this base. One quality feature is the number of springs that you place on the seating area. (In every piece of upholstered furniture from Sinn’s workshop, the number of springs is vast; plus, they are intricately joined together by hand.) Then there is the question of how precise one could align springs of different sizes. Towards the edge of the seat, for example, they become somewhat more substantial so that the copper-plated springs (rest assured, the quiet-running springs feature a wax coating) already define the basic shape and thus the seat’s core. With excellent manual skill, one finds the right balance between the static stability of the firmly secured springs and the necessary ease of movement of the seat surface. The quality of an upholstered piece of furniture depends decisively on the quality of the spring core; the upholsterer regularly tries it out during this work step.
Best Fit, Best Pratice, Best Quality. The Actual Upholstery.
In the next step, the multi-layered construction of the actual upholstery takes shape. First, the coil springs get covered with a heavy deck pad made of canvas. The canvas protects the then applied upholstery support made of latex-coated and vulcanised coconut fibre. Two layers of cold foam and one layer of cotton wool form the top layers of the cushion. One may metaphorically think of an onion here: Even before the upholsterer applies the final cover, there are already seven “scales” on top of each other. It is the perfect interplay of these layers that produces a high level of seating comfort.
