Promoting Peruvian craftsmanship at fair conditions.
The alpaca hair for these blankets comes from Peru where 80% of all alpacas live and where a traditional processing of alpaca hair has developed with a highly specialised craftsmanship. In 1986, out of their enthusiasm for Peruvian handicraft, including pottery, jewellery and cabinetry, a small group of Peruvian business people founded Allpa to coordinate cooperation with skilled artisans. . From the beginning, it was the outspoken goal to support craftsmen in the marketing of their products and to guarantee them an income and social benefits like payments in a health insurance fund. The organisation is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and has a headquarters in Lima with 30 employees. 80 small and medium sized workshops, most of them weaving mills in various regions of Peru, are members of Allpa. Experienced weavers process cotton and alpaca hair that comes exclusively from their own country. These blankets are also woven by hand from the finest Peruvian alpaca hair. The colour gradient and composition attest to the high demands, not just on the material and processing, but also on the designs of Allpa products which unify Peruvian tradition and modern usage.
