Beneficial Arnica. Cooling Mint.
For this salve, the Benedictine nuns in the Monastero Santa Maria delle Grazie in the little town of Orte use a base of beeswax combined with olive oil which facilitates the absorption of the extracts. Only natural vegetable ingredients are used. The cream is indicated for the care of skin and joints. In addition to arnica, the Benedictine nuns add extracts of witch hazel, chamomile, larkspur, St. John's wort, yarrow and marigold. A cooling portion of mint rounds off the formula.
The Benedictine nuns in the small town of Orte in the beautiful region of central Italy between Viterbo and Terrni derive their inspiration from their famous predecessor, Hildegard of Bingen. But instead of indulging themselves in medieval romanticism their sole aim is to show which tradition is theirs and that they have enough imagination to conceive an appropriate motivational guide for their work. The nuns produce personal care products characterised by great simplicity and a handful of effective ingredients. For example, beeswax is the basis of all their creams and balms. The nuns also use herbs and plants from their own monastery garden in addition to those they must purchase because they cannot cultivate them.
