Monasteries in the Baroque period were centres for the arts, especially music. For instance, in the Austrian monastery, Heiligenkreuz, there is a music collection of the Cistercian Albericus Mazak dating from the middle of the 17th century. Together with his ensemble „dolce risonanza“ and the Heiligenkreuz monks, Florian Wieninger has reconstructed a Baroque vesper. The contrast between the Gregorian chorale in unison and the colourful Baroque instrumental and vocal artistry calls up the emotions and musical wealth of the church service of the time.
