In the Franconian comb maker Groetsch, combs and brushes have been made by hand since 1848. The family business, now in its fourth generation, processes only natural materials, which, with the exception of the horn, come from the region. And because the Pegnitz River runs directly through the property, even the electricity can be generated on site.
The combs are made especially for Manufactum from two elastic types of wood: the wood of the Speierling and the Elsbeere. Both belong to the rose family and are related to the pear tree. The wood is fine-pored, therefore relatively waterproof, and it is flexible. Except for the rather short curling comb, the combs are equipped with a stabilizing bar at the back made of the very tough wood of the beech. The teeth are individually sawn and polished to a mirror finish over the entire surface, including the spaces between them where it matters most. The base of the teeth is carefully rounded, and the tips are as smooth as porcelain. In this way, the scalp is pleasantly massaged and not scratched. The careful polishing means that the wood requires no further surface treatment and acquires a caring patina during use.
Also for the brushes is used domestic wood - usually hard pear or beech wood - which is processed by hand, only oiled and finally covered with natural materials such as wild boar bristles, soft goat hair or cactus fibers.
