Metal with a Grain.
In the 17th century, a Japanese blacksmith found a way to forge non-ferrous and precious metals together in a damascene technique, creating an unusual play of colour on the surface of the material. Since the pattern resembled that of richly veined wood, he called the technique "Mokume-gane", which means "metal with a grain".
The blacksmith in the Königsmünster Abbey in Meschede in the Sauerland uses the process to forge belt buckles made of brass and copper which are just as indestructible as steel.
