    General Information

    Metal with a Grain.

In the 17th century, a Japanese blacksmith found a way to forge non-ferrous and precious metals together in a damascene technique, creating an unusual play of colour on the surface of the material. Since the pattern resembled that of richly veined wood, he called the technique "Mokume-gane", which means "metal with a grain".
This bracelet is forged in the monastery smithy in Meschede in a classic, simple damascene pattern. The monks of the Königsmünster Abbey forge an alloy of brass and copper which is just as solid and practically indestructible as steel but will develop the typical patina with time.

From wood to metal: Japanese non-ferrous metal art

In the 17th century, a Japanese master blacksmith discovered the possibility of welding non-ferrous and precious metals together using the damascene technique to create unique color effects. He called such products "Mokume Gane" - "Wood Grained Metals". This metalworking technique, which is only decorative at first glance, also seems to be part of the great Japanese tradition of developing aesthetics from nature, of conceiving art as "natural artificiality", as in the fascinating designs of ikebana or bonsai gardening. In this case, under technical conditions, metals that would not be found together in nature in this way combine to form a structure that is copied from the plant world. The Klosterschmiede Königsmünster in Meschede has also adopted this technique in its damascene enthusiasm.
