Cabinet Element 28
A Classic Shelving System. The Shannon Registrator.
The Shannon registrator is probably the first modular furniture in history. At the end of the 19th century, the Globe-Wernicke company in Cincinnati developed the system’s components and named the result “elastic bookcase”. In England, the furniture was patented in 1896 and manufactured by Shannon. According to legend, British foreign missions used the cabinet parts wrapped in blankets as “elephant packing bags” for books. From the 1920s onwards, the registrator was manufactured (and sold with great success) by the carpentry workshop of Gebrüder Aug. Zeiss & Co. in Berlin. We have the registrator cabinet system rebuilt exclusively for us – in a cabinetmaker’s workshop in Wuerttemberg. Our Shannon registrator is made of solid wood, namely that of Dombey’s beech (stained and silk-matt lacquered). This species (Nothofagus dombeyi) belongs to the hardwoods and grows in extensive stands in southern South America (in this case, in Chile). The wood shows a lively grain.
Modular furniture like the Shannon registrator is ideal for realizing furnishing ideas. You’ll find it easy to combine its elements according to your needs. The Shannon allows creating a wide variety of highly functional, even room-filling furnishing solutions. The registrator is perfect as a bookcase in the office or the living room, as a sideboard, chest of drawers, cupboard, buffet for the kitchen, living and dining room, and much more. You can equip each piece of furniture with additional elements and various interior partitions or complete your registrator of choice with matching complementary furniture such as the roller shutter wardrobes or the roller shutter desk. Even in the most practical aspects, the registrator was already way ahead of its time: The higher base elements store “cable clutter” invisibly.
Meanwhile, you find replicas of this original Manufactum furniture – and this one is not the only one from our range – elsewhere. Our urgent, disinterested advice: Please compare beforehand, if possible, not only depictions of various products but with more than a glimpse from your eyes and a touch of your hand. You can find built-up registrators in some of our department stores.
The Modular System.
The basic structure of the modular system follows a few simple principles: one or more carcase elements (in three depths: 40, 34 and 28 cm) are stacked on top of a – flat or high – plinth element. An optional cornice element forms the upper finish. The resulting segments can stand alone or in series of any length next to each other, even around a corner. The carcase elements (with various functions, sizes and designs) build the heart of the system. The classic carcase element is the versatile cupboard element in three depths (28, 34, 40 cm) and heights. Additionally, you find functional enhancements in drawer elements (depths 40 cm) and shelf elements (depth 28 cm). There are specific corner elements for corner solutions. We supply the carcases in different, interdependent heights. The carcases’ dimensions are designed in such a way that the construction of a complete piece of furniture from several segments can result in uniform and different heights. Plus, you can assemble individual components as well as the entire piece of furniture in uniform or different depths. You can choose between 28, 34 and 40 cm depth. In its classic form, the registrator is built up with cupboard elements of different depths – i.e. recessing towards the top. However, you can use components of the same depth straight to the top as well.
