Cast Iron Garden Grill and Fireplace
Cast Iron from East Frisia.
The refinement of iron casting left a mark on the 19th century like hardly any other technology. Architecture benefitted mightily from the advantages of the material. However, cast iron is by no means a 'historical material'. Its properties, above all its toughness and heat resistance, are still valued today. Since it was introduced, modern cast iron has developed into a high-tech industry, for instance in heating engineering, where cast iron with an extraordinary capacity for heat storage is used. A long history and state of the art technique often go hand in hand, as the case of this grill manufacturer shows. The East Friesian foundry was started in 1873, and today all cast products and their constituent parts still originate there. Highly modern ovens and heating systems for indoor use are assembled there, and for a few years now, an exceptionally cleverly built multi-functional garden barbeque and fireplace is being produced.
Cast Iron for the Garden.
The basic construction is a 'globe', 70 cm in circumference, open on top and furnished with a window flap, standing securely on three legs. Like all the accessory parts except the fireplace window, it is made entirely of cast iron, weighing in at 170 kg. Thanks to the additional pluggable heavy duty castors it can be manoeuvred to the appropriate place on the terrace. When covered and stored for the winter, the surface enamel protects it from corrosion for many years. Wherever it is located it can perform three functions: it will serve as a grill or stove, as a garden fireplace and with some additional accessories, as a smoker oven.
Grilling and cooking.
For grilling and cooking, the charcoal grate is hung in the belly of the grill. To regulate the cooking temperature, you choose between three slots in different height where the charcoal grate can be inserted. With the aid of iron hooks, the placement of the grate can be changed while the grill is operating. Once the charcoal is glowing, you can use different plates and gratings for grilling and cooking. You can insert them at two different heights to regulate the temperature even further. The semi-circular grate is furnished with grooves of different depths and depending on the amount of fat on the grilled meat can be used accordingly. A cast iron plate on one side is designed for offering a grooved grill surface for gentle simmering while on the other side a smooth surface is reserved for keeping the grilled food warm, for heating a pot or serving as a pan to make crêpes or pancakes. Included in the accessories is a paella pan which is large enough for family portions or feeding a small garden party.
When the evenings begin to get chilly: a heating fireplace.
With a few adjustments, the grill can be turned into a garden fireplace. The charcoal holder is removed and placed upside down. It now serves as a chimney. The fuel can be fed directly in the fireplace through the window flap and ignited. If you have just finished grilling, the embers can be used as a fire bed. The air intake for the combustion of the wood can be regulated with a damper. The rest of a relaxed evening can now be spent with a view of the blazing firewood.
The grill can also be used as a smoker oven. The accessories for smoking are not part of the basic equipment but can be ordered separately. The smoke oven set consists of a chimney piece, a control thermometer and 10 rods for hanging the food to be smoked. The chimneypiece is equipped with a flap, through which one can observe the progress of the smoking process.
The freight costs amount to € 150.00. The grill is delivered by a haulage firm.
