    General Information

A competitor for the Frog Prince

We strongly advise against throwing this frog on the wall: The chance of a handsome prince hiding in the glazed ceramic tends to zero. Anyway, this is - the missing crown gives it away - clearly not a specimen of the frog kings that reign in many places, but a quite down-to-earth animal in a remarkably casual, lifelike attitude.

Southern French (art) craft. True to nature

Pottery has been produced in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in southern France since the Middle Ages. At the beginning, intended exclusively for domestic use, it developed, in addition to the production of decorative vessel ceramics, a new specialty: the lifelike sculptures of animals of the region, such as cicadas, salamanders and lizards. As decorative objects, they mainly decorate houses. The traditional Provençal ridge turret, a lizard on the foremost ridge tile, is part of this tradition. We obtain the animal ceramics from the Figuière family, which is already the third generation to practice the ceramic craft - and is now the only remaining company producing in this figurative domain. The glazing is done purely by hand - each figurine is thus potentially unique, which may differ slightly from all others in color and patterning.

    Product Information

    Article Number 68656

Ceramic with a colored glaze. Height 5.5 cm, length 17.7 cm, width 21 cm. weight 450 g.
A reminder: The ceramic is frost resistant, but if the surface becomes moist, the glaze could crack at temperatures below freezing. It is better to bring the ceramics inside in the winter or to some other dry location. They can spend the winter as decorations on house walls protected from the rain without danger to the glaze.

A Rival Of the Frog King.
We cannot recommend throwing this frog against the wall. The chance that a beautiful prince will emerge from the shards is almost zero. You'll anyway notice by the missing crown that this is not one of the locally known reigning Frog Kings. This is a simple down-to-earth (or pond) frog with a no-nonesense attitude.

Craftsmanship and art drawn from nature, from the South of France.
Pottery has been manufactured in the south of France in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie since the Middle Ages. Originally intended solely for domestic use, in addition to the production of decorative pottery vessels a new speciality emerged: sculptures drawn from nature of local animals, like cicadas, salamanders and lizards. They are most often found as objects decorating the houses. The traditional provençal ridge turrets with a lizard on the frontmost ridge tile is part of this tradition. The Figuière family, which has been producing pottery for three generations, and which has become the last firm producing such ceramics, supplies us with ceramic animals. They are glazed by hand, so that each one is unique, distinguishing it slightly in color and pattern from the others.
