Robust and indestructible: doormat in large material density, manufactured in the Eifel.
Past and future. A journey through time to the Schär coconut weaving mill.
Coconut weaving was once a broad-based industry in Europe and especially in Germany, but today there is almost nothing left of it. In the company August Schär KG, the original manufacturing method has been preserved as if in a time bubble. However, this is by no means with a museum-like attitude, but rather because modernization has been postponed until the old machines and techniques are once again in demand. The company is located in idyllic Eisenschmitt in the middle of the Volcanic Eifel and has been active for over 75 years in the processing of coconut fibers into high-quality carpets and mats for industry, commerce and private households. When most other coir weaving mills had to go out of business, Schär was able to expand its stock of old machinery, which is why the company's operations are secure in the long term from a technical point of view. Coconut fibers are somewhat bulky to work with, but have unique properties. The products made from them last "forever", they harmonize the indoor climate due to their ability to store excess humidity, they do not absorb dust and are very easy to clean. Since coconut fibers are exposed to extreme loads in nature, they form a correspondingly high resistance. Coconut is antibacterial, flame retardant, noise and heat insulating, breathable and antistatic. However, dyed goods should not be constantly exposed to strong sunlight. Carpets made of coconut fibers have a rustic surface texture; irregularities in the yarn are inevitable and add to the charm of the product. Doormats for house entrances are as much a part of Schär's program as the red carpet, obligatory at state receptions in many countries. The employees work on mechanical production lines that are no longer found in this form anywhere in Germany. The coconut products are sought after for their long shelf life and insensitivity. Schär obtains the natural coconut fibers from India and Sri Lanka, and further processing consists, if necessary, of dyeing, setting up the looms, the actual weaving, and the subsequent cutting and finishing in the sewing shop.
Only suitable for indoor use.
It is also recommended to use a carpet pad for sealed parquet floors, as the back of the floor mats is made of PVC. It may happen that this reacts with the sealant.
