What is growing there?

The girl Sophie spends the vacations with her grandparents in the country. The grandparents have a big garden - Sophie gets her own little vegetable patch, sows lettuce and radishes and helps "grandpa-pa" where she can: She mulches the onions, waters the broccoli, and harvests the carrots for lunch. Gerda Muller's illustrations are so lively that the viewer almost believes he or she is standing next to the girl in the flower bed and holding a tool in his or her hand. And as if in passing, the little stories that are told convey some very tangible gardening knowledge; why it is good to have ladybugs in the garden, what goes on the compost, or how to tell the difference between fruit and root vegetables, for example. The desire to garden and work grows with every picture and with every question that Sophie asks the grandfather and which he patiently answers.
