The handbags of Stiebich & Rieth are characterized by a timeless, consistently clear design language, purist, unfussy, restrained elegant. Some would even attest them a certain austerity or even inconspicuousness, because they get along without loud luxury glamor. Yet they are pure luxury. Understatement hits the nail on the head here, because the bags are of the highest quality in terms of materials and manufacturing: selected leathers of unusually lush material thickness are processed by hand using traditional saddlery techniques - entirely in northern Germany.
That's also where the bag manufacturer's headquarters are located, in Hamburg to be precise. And since Hamburgers have a reputation for having a sure knack for understatement and classic chic, it's no surprise that the company's founders Julia Rieth and Detlef Stiebich are true Hamburgers. The two designers have long worked for and with major fashion companies. With their bag label, founded in 2012, they are returning to the roots of design "craftsmanship": working with their hands. This allows them to check every step, every change, to see if functionality, appearance and wearing comfort gain as a result. And it allows them to keep experimenting with good solutions. In the end, every stitch, every seam has a function and every bag bears the reduced, cool and sharp signature of Stiebich & Rieth.

No computers, no sketches - at Stiebich & Rieth is thought and worked three-dimensionally from the beginning and already the first draft made of leather, and that by hand. The upper leather comes from cattle from Germany and is also tanned here. Despite its opulent material thickness, it is exceptionally soft, shows an even, velvety surface and still has all the properties of the natural material, so it can age beautifully and develop an individual patina. To produce a leather of such quality, experience, skill and time are necessary, Stiebich & Rieth therefore have the cowhides tanned in a German and for the lining leather in an Italian traditional tannery under high ecological standards.
When cutting the leather pieces, the Hamburg manufactory also relies on the skills of a traditional craftsman in northern Germany. The Ludwig Schröder leather manufactory has been involved in processing the best leather goods and belts since 1825. Here, even the seam holes are individually pre-punched to achieve the most precise, perfect seam possible. Finally, the blanks are carefully sewn together by hand with two needles using saddlery techniques, creating the distinctive topstitched seams. Only the edges of the shoulder straps are machine-stitched.
Stiebich & Rieth also pays attention to quality and solid, durable materials when it comes to the details. Strong multifilament yarn is used for the seams, which is additionally waxed after braiding to achieve maximum stability and durability. All metal parts are made of solid brass. During and after manufacturing, each individual bag goes through numerous checks before it leaves the Hamburg studio.
