    General Information

Versatile. Baskets and bags made from recycled plastic.

Mifuko is Swahili and means bag. And since the cooperation of the designer duo Minna Impiö and Mari Martikainen with the Kenyan women began with bags and baskets, the two Finns named their company after them. Traditionally, the baskets are made entirely of sisal, but now the women also process recycled plastic. For our baskets, therefore, sisal is used in the warp and recycled plastic in the weft, which makes them resistant to water and dirt and can be used in many ways: as organizers in the bathroom, children's room or study, for needlework utensils, newspapers, fruits and vegetables or (with the appropriate waterproof finish inside) as planters for the windowsill. Worked as a large bag with leather handles, the range of uses expands and you can use it as a laundry basket or use it to carry firewood, the market groceries or even beach stuff.
By the way, who wove your basket, you can see on the attached sign, there the women sign their names.

Mifuko - Kenyan tradition in Finnish designs.

The designs of the Finnish label Mifuko are not only characterized by Kenyan tradition and craftsmanship, but the products are also manufactured in Kenya. The cooperation with Kenyan craftswomen came about through the long-standing connection of the two Mifuko designers with Kenya. Meanwhile, Mifuko works with about 400 women who live mainly in rural areas and weave carpets, weave baskets or make bags and jewelry. Fair payment and business relationships designed for the long term are just as important as the skills and traditional manufacturing techniques are taken into account in the designs of the products. The women are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and pass it on to younger women. They can build up their own network and are finally in a position to earn something extra for their livelihood, because first and foremost the women and their families work in agriculture. Only when their own fields are cultivated and the animals are taken care of do they weave carpets or make baskets and bags for Mifuko, thereby generating additional income that often saves them through times of drought.

Minna Impiö and Mari Martikainen have had Mifuko certified as a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), which implies the permanent implementation and control of fair trade and fair remuneration as well as the consideration of ecological compatibility and occupational safety in the production of the products. In addition, they finance projects that improve the lives of the workers and their families, such as the construction of sanitary facilities.
