These tall, slim plant pots are not at all easy to make – because of their height, great care has to be taken during the throwing process. They’re baked at a temperature of over 1000° C, so they stand up to frost; they’re slightly porous in order to prevent water collecting. The decoration on the upper rim is done by hand (before firing) with a scroller. ‘Long Toms’ were invented in England in Victorian times, when gardeners used them for growing long-rooted plants like roses and clematis. Professional rose-growers use terracotta pots of this kind even today – in a variety of shapes. Even in the 19th century their shape varied from county to county.
