Truly a Multi-Talent. Soap for Personal Care and Household Cleaning.
Just calling it curd soap does not do it justice, because quality-wise, it is far superior to base soaps, which are usually made from low-quality fats. Aleppo soap, known in Arabic as “sapun ghar”, or “laurel oil soap” is made from the best olive oil and enriched with the oil from laurel berries and leaves. It is used as a results-producing basic curd soap, and to excellent effect as a fine soap for personal care.
Because the breakage of a cake of soap does not affect the cleaning properties of the soap, we offer Aleppo soap in loose pieces and in an environmentally friendly, 1 kg paper bag for those who want to take advantage of its many useful applications. The nourishing properties of the soap for the body and complexion, especially for sensitive skin types, are well known. It can also be used as shampoo, especially for dry or damaged hair, as well as a shaving soap.
Less well known (at least in our latitudes) is that Aleppo soap can take care of the laundry too. Grated and dissolved in hot water, it is an additive-free detergent substitute for any fabric. Linen regains its volume when washed with Aleppo soap, and its sheen and smoothness is enhanced. The soap can be used to pre-treat stains or greasy shirt collars by merely moistening the bar and rubbing it over the affected areas. If simply left in the closet, Aleppo soap keeps moths away from clothes. It can also be used diluted with water and sprayed on plants to deter aphids. Its other uses are discussed in books on simple home remedies, and you are likely to discover some of your own as you go along. This Aleppo soap comes from the only factory within the city limits of Aleppo still producing soap.
Natural Plant Oils and Traditional Soap Making. Craft Products from Aleppo.
Aleppo, the biblical Helbon located in modern Syria, is the Arab birthplace for the art of producing soap from vegetable oils. From the soap works in and around Aleppo, only a few still use the traditional process handed down by generations of soap makers. One of this traditional firms produces these skin friendly soaps. They can be used daily as soaps for washing and shampooing and are known for enfolding their beneficial effects in hand, body and facial care. The soaps are based on olive oil from the first cold pressing which is then gently saponified at 95 °C. The thick liquid soap is poured over a large sheet of waxed paper on the floor of the manufactory. The large, green, flat mass is allowed to cool down and harden for about a day. The whole mass is cut into individual cubes then, and each cube is stamped with the soap artisan's name or signet. The cubes of soap are then stacked with room to spare to allow maximum air exposure. Once they have dried sufficiently, they are put into a subterranean chamber to be aged for six months to a year. While it is ageing, the free alkaline content of the soap breaks down upon slow reaction with air; the moisture content of the soap is also reduced, making the soap hard and long lasting. This ageing process turns the colour of the soap to a pale gold.
You can extend the drying process at home by storing the soap dry at 0 to 40 ° C.
