Manufactum Snugly Upholstered Reading Armchair
Manufactum Snugly Upholstered Reading Armchair.
We stumbled on this reading armchair by chance. The reduced form language and paucity of material was a hallmark of the 1950s. Its most striking characteristic is a wood frame construction which is both a leg and arm rest. That makes for a furniture design that is beautiful, but also stable, flexible and ergonomically optimal.
The demands on craftsmanship of the "reconstruction" according to our specifications were considerable. The Polsterei Sinn upholsterers in Stemwede in Westphalia developed a cushion for the strikingly flat upholstery that could keep up with the much more luxurious seating furniture: The seating surface sits on a "mini-barrel-shaped pocket spring ", resting on a plywood support that is slit for better ventilation and suspension.
It proved difficult to find a cabinet maker who could form the bentwood armrests in the desired dimensions, out of one piece of wood, from visual and haptical standpoints. The long search ended in Thurgau in Switzerland in a steam bending shop which not only could build sleds. With the aid of a small machine park and a profound knowledge of the material, they can also bend wood in (almost) any curve.
