When the volume "Das große Buch vom Leben auf dem Lande" (The Big Book of Life in the Countryside) first appeared in 1976, it played a major role in inspiring an entire generation to embrace an "alternative rural life." The new edition now addresses all those who are interested in self-sufficiency and attach importance to a sustainable way of life.
The lushly illustrated pages systematically and comprehensively present what is important for planting and tilling kitchen garden plots or for running a small farm. The garden section is expanded to include detailed information on cultivating fruits, vegetables, and herbs for one's own use and without the use of artificial fertilizers. In the same way, hints and practical tips on different methods of cultivation, digging, sowing, harvesting, storing and preserving the harvested produce are not neglected. In addition, there is information on animal husbandry, beekeeping, brewing beer or, for example, cheese production.
