The chair-making tradition in Rabenau is almost 400 years old. In 1910 the Rabenau firm outfitted the »Old Nikolai School« in Leipzig. When the renovated building was reopened as a culture center in 1994 the furniture was retro-manufactured in Rabenau.
What goes into the chairs.
The frames of the Rabenau furniture are made of solid beechwood, stained and polished. The joints are pegged and glued, the legs are milled. The seating frames are mitered and the edges have a bar profile. The groove profile in the leg is characteristic for this kind of chair.
The seats: They’re covered with leather or wicker.
The seating frames are either covered with wicker or leather:
- The leather seats have a plywood base upholstered with quilting cotton. The black leather covering is fastened with decorative studs.
- With the wicker covered seats, the split, stained wicker is triply braided by hand through holes bored in the chair frame.
