Handmade House Numbers. Cast in Modelling Plaster
Using the same material as the famous Limoges porcelain, these house numbers are cast in a factory in Upper Bavaria. To begin with, the mouldings are vigorously compacted in gypsum moulds by hand to prevent distortion. The porcelain shrinks by about 3% during the drying process, when the house numbers are wrapped in blotting paper and gently weighted down. Only when they are completely dry are the edges wiped carefully with a damp sponge before being bisque fired at 980°C, after which they are given a colour glazing and then fired in the kiln at 1300°C. The porcelain reduces in size by roughly another 12% at this stage. The wiping down with the damp sponge beforehand serves as the first quality check when even the finest cracks in the material are revealed.
The matching screws and rawl plugs for affixing the numbers and letters are included, as are the plastic spacers, which ensure that the porcelain does not break when tightening the screws.
