Camaldoli is the monastery that served as a launching point for a whole monastic culture. It is still active today. The number 11 plays an important role in its history marking the confluence of space and time: In the 11th century and 1,111 metres above sea level St. Romuald founded this half eremitical branch of the Benedictines north east of Arezzo. Similar to the Carthusians there are also hermit monks here, each inhabiting small houses with gardens. The Benedictine complex includes a monastery with communal living so that Camaldulsians can choose which way of life suits them best. One of their most important areas of work is the manufacture of cosmetic products.
