Scented Candle Looops
Scents Captured. Bringing Nature Home.
In the mountains, so they say, it is easy to clear your mind. Small wonder, it was in the mountains, more precisely in the Salzkammergut region on the northern edge of the Alps, that Julia Schliefsteiner and Markus Niederfriniger looked into the question of how to capture the scents of nature, preserve them and make them available at home. Finally, they came up with the idea to start a manufactory and produce scented candles. The spark kindled a fire, and they founded the Looops candle manufactory. The deeper they delved into the world of scents and aromas, the more they realised how fundamental the effects of redolencies on our well-being might be. Fortunately, they discovered that the insights of aromatherapy marvellously fuse with the approach of their new craft. So Julia Schliefsteiner directly followed up with aromatherapy training and is now familiar with the gentle extraction of essential oils and their effects.
Nature: an Inspiration and a Resource.
True to their principle, “Nature is good, just the way it is”, they add neither artificial nor synthetic substances and use natural wax obtained from rapidly renewable plants (like soy and rapeseed). As a side benefit, these plant-based candles burn longer and soot less than mineral oil-based ones. They have the wicks made of pure cotton or, indeed, wood. They create the fragrances in the company’s “kitchen” near Salzburg and have the scented candles made by hand onsite – a complex process including many work steps. The routine begins with extracting the valuable, fragrant, and highly effective oils from herbs, blossoms, and fruits. They learned that new creations benefit from a time to rest when essential oils add up in a mixture so that the various fragrance components can blend into one harmonious scent. Then they pour small test candles and monitor the scents over several days. For the most part, Schliefsteiner and Niederfriniger get the inspiration for their creations from the landscape of the Salzkammergut, the herbs on the alpine pastures and the lush forests shortly after rainfall. As a matter of fact, hiking through the mountains and enjoying the surrounding nature not only clears the mind but makes room for new ideas.
