Ornaments Inspired by Silence. Greeting cards from Cloister Land.

In 2014, design students went on a journey of discovery and visited monasteries to develop product proposals for the cultural tourism association KLOSTERLAND (i. e., cloister land) from their experiences. One result of this project is the greeting card series “Ornaments of Silence – Greeting Cards from the KLOSTERLAND”, based on 13 pattern variations, each pattern developed for a member monastery of the association. The colour and pattern collection by designer Carolin Libuda shows that exploring “foreign worlds” such as life in monasteries is worthwhile. Libuda looked for images of the monasteries’ exterior and interior and the surroundings; next, she scanned and rastered the depictions she found especially characteristic for the sites to create a colour code for each monastery location. In this way, she identified the essential colour components reflecting the atmosphere of each cloister and worked to convey a holistic colour impression of the different monastical ensembles. Libuda systematised the colours and constituted individual colour spectra. By reducing those spectra to 12 essential colours, the respective colour codes came into sight. What’s more, the artist intensively examined forms, structures and ornaments on each site to identify the ones which appeared to be most meaningful for the respective cloister, for example, elements of the floor tiles or windows in an abbey. By sketching, redrawing and editing these elements, Libuda generated the patterns. Finally, she presented each cloister with a conclusive pattern design in combination with a colour selected from the colour code. One may think of various purposes for these patterns. In the case of the greeting cards, you find them depicted as an endless pattern variation in reverse printing (in white). Although the ornamental designs on the greeting cards represent specific monastic sites, you can use them without hesitation for all conceivable occasions.
