General Information

Jubilee Piece in a Limited Edition: the EZM 1.1.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the EZM 1, (it’s the acronym for the first ‘Einsatz-Zeit-Messer’, the German word for mission timer), Sinn has now introduced the EZM 1.1 as a fitting tribute. It comes in a limited edition of 500 pieces. The EZM 1.1 is a chronograph which is equipped with a centre-weighted 60-second stop hand and a corresponding 60-minute stop hand, too. This means that 60 minutes – rather than the usual 30 minutes – are counted in one sweep of the hand, and the assigned minute stop scale covers the entire diameter of the dial. It is therefore even quicker and easier to record stop times accurately. In order to support readability, all markings on the dial that are not relevant to the mission have been visually muted in red. In addition, the bidirectional pilot’s bezel features minute ratcheting for counting down shorter time measurements. This tegimented (i.e. specially hardened and scratch-resistant) pilot’s bezel is permanently connected to the housing. The bead-blasted stainless steel case is also tegimented and equipped with the Ar-Dehumidifying technology developed by Sinn, which works to protect the chronograph against misting up and improve functional safety using a dry capsule, a protective gas filling and extremely diffusion-reducing seals. Inside, the SINN SZ01 chronograph movement works on the basis of the tried-and-tested Valjoux 7750 calibre. The movement, which is lubricated with Sinn’s age-resistant special oil, ensures smooth operation in the temperature range from -45 °C to +80 °C. The crown and push pieces on the EZM 1.1 are located on the left side of the case, which means that they won’t get caught up in anything even during the urgent handling of some complex matter and cannot press into the back of the hand during use thus stopping the time measurement inadvertently.

From Professionals for Professionals. 20 Years of Mission Timers from Sinn.

Since its establishment in 1961, Sinn Spezialuhren, from Frankfurt am Main, has developed into a technology and housing specialist manufacturing and equipping its timepieces for their particular purpose without compromise. Sinn is known to be constantly looking to industry and science for the best technologies and materials. This obsession with detail has resulted in a quality that has manifested itself in professional circles for 20 years. In 1997, Sinn constructed the first mission timer for a special unit under the German Customs Investigation Bureau, the then relatively new Central Customs Support Group (ZUZ), which is comparable to a special task force (SEK) of the police. The EZM 1, developed in the direct dialogue between the members of the special task force and Sinn engineers and watchmakers, already excelled in terms of both process and functional safety, which are features that have gone on to characterise all subsequent models. Over the years, mission timers have followed for a number of other occupational groups in which wristwatches are an important component of personal equipment: pilots, divers, firefighters, emergency physicians, rescue workers, the GSG 9 (the German Border Protection Group 9, the elite Police Tactical Unit of the German Federal Police and the German Navy Special Forces (KSM), a combat unit of frogman.
From EZM number 1 to EZM number 16 Sinn remained true to the motto: form follows function. As a result, no two mission timers look alike, since, depending on the user group, the deployment conditions in which they have to prove their worth, are quite different - though with wetness or magnetism, severe heat and cold as well as extreme temperature changes, high pressure in deep water or low atmospheric pressure at high altitudes, vibrations, shocks, blows and aggressive fluids such as salt water or disinfectants always demanding and complex. In short, these mission timers have to endure a lot, work precisely like an instrument and, even under the most adverse conditions, make timed situations comprehensible at a glance.
