    General Information

Applied Ethnobotany. Brushing teeth with the siwak root.

Branches and roots of the toothbrush tree known as siwak or miswak 'Salvadora persica (L.)' have been used for centuries in East Africa, the Near East, and especially in the Arab region for thorough and gentle tooth cleaning. The fiber structure of the siwak root is ideal for toothbrushes; the wood only needs to be finely fanned out to form a brush-like head. The siwak root naturally contains a lot of fluorine and silicon as well as vitamin C, small amounts of tannins, saponins and flavonoids as well as minerals such as potassium, sodium, sodium bicarbonate and calcium oxide, in addition to deposits of the finest bassanite crystals - gentle cleaning agents. So it already brings its toothpaste with it and requires neither water nor toothpaste, which is particularly convenient when you're on the go and makes brushing your teeth location-independent.

    Gentle and effective. Everywhere.

The handling of the siwak wood is very simple: peel the wood 1 cm and fiber the peeled end by chewing on the first millimeters with your incisors, twisting the miswak wood until it is soft and frays like a brush. To brush your teeth, all you have to do is moisten it a little and then gently stroke it over the curves of the necks of the teeth along the gum line, the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth - without much pressure or even scrubbing. This makes cleaning particularly gentle and at the same time extremely effective, as each tooth is cleaned individually. The brushing itself is also found to be very thorough and pleasant - after a short familiarization period. From time to time, when the cleaning effect wears off, simply cut the frayed end and proceed as described - you already have a new toothbrush.
