Writing book animal motif

A copybook with backstitch binding, a technique borrowed from fabric processing, a very solid type of thread stitching in which the complete contents of the booklet is punctured at short intervals and sewn. Backstitch binding, also known as "Singer stitching", enables the booklet to be opened as wide as possible.

Knowledge is based on the recognition of certain characteristics. It would seem that the more comprehensive and precise the identification, the more true and accurate the knowledge. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be surprising that the scientific drawing continues to possess a high significance: by its nature, it requires a concentrated examination of every detail. In contrast with the photographer, the draughtsman must concentrate on every individual element, overlooking nothing, in order to capture the object in its entirety and to be able to commit it to paper true to reality. Which is why drawings are still made today in the physical sciences, like botany, zoology, or archaeology, to make sure all characteristics of the object under investigation are assembled: It’s the drawing that leads to knowledge.
Which is also why the motifs of these copybooks and greeting cards, based on historic drawings from an extensive collection of graphics and prints from the 18th century, give the same attention and merit to fossils and living organisms, to species of lower and higher rank in the biological classification. They replicate with the highest precision and dedication to detail what upon closer observation is noted and thereby recognised.
