Tullahoma, with more than 65 years’ experience in tanning and processing leather, manufactures the snow shoe covering from rawhide. After being cut in strips it is coated with synthetic resin and then woven in a wide mesh on the shoes, hindering the accumulation of snow as so often happens with closed tops of modern shoes made of metal. The binding is made of extremely resilient 3.5 mm thick leather and with the aid of the three straps equipped with metal fasteners it adapts to all shoe sizes. Sturdy shoes, like hiking shoes are recommended for hiking with the snow shoes.
You should occasionally soap the straps with fat to keep them from becoming brittle. The nicks and dents that occur when the shoes are used frequently can and should be repaired.
Silent in the snow.
Snowshoes like these have been used in North America for trapping and hunting in ice and snow for hundreds of years. The Inuit, other North American Indians and the trappers used them to silently move through the snow, without alerting the animals. Today, when one encounters a group of hikers in the snow, in low mountains or light alpine terrain, the clatter of their iron cleats and aluminium frames announces their approach long beforehand. They generate enough noise to drive an old trapper to distraction. The technology formerly used to proceed as quietly as possible, now offers the opportunity to experience the surroundings as a part of nature and not as a noisy intruder.
The essential snow shoe.
This traditional, silent model from Iverson, located in the snow filled Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is a good approximation of the archetypal snow shoe and is still used in Canada and the USA today. The only difference is the covering which is coated with synthetic resin to prolong the life of the shoe. The shoe itself has a broad base, suiting it well for extensive, hilly terrain with deep snow. The rear of the shoe is rounded to provide manoeuvrability in scrub filled terrain. The frame is made of tough, elastic white ash from the hardwood forests of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
