Tullahoma, with more than 65 years’ experience in tanning and processing leather, manufactures the snow shoe covering from rawhide. After being cut in strips it is coated with synthetic resin and then woven in a wide mesh on the shoes, hindering the accumulation of snow as so often happens with closed tops of modern shoes made of metal. The binding is made of extremely resilient 3.5 mm thick leather and with the aid of the three straps equipped with metal fasteners it adapts to all shoe sizes. Sturdy shoes, like hiking shoes are recommended for hiking with the snow shoes.
You should occasionally soap the straps with fat to keep them from becoming brittle. The nicks and dents that occur when the shoes are used frequently can and should be repaired.
Silent in the snow.
Snowshoes like these have been usedin North America for trapping and huntingin ice and snow for hundreds ofyears. The Inuit, other North AmericanIndians and the trappers used them tosilently move through the snow, withoutalerting the animals. Today, when oneencounters a group of hikers in thesnow, in low mountains or light alpineterrain, the clatter of their iron cleatsand aluminium frames announces theirapproach long beforehand. Theygenerateenough noise to drive an oldtrapper to distraction. The technologyformerly used to proceed as quietly aspossible, now offers the opportunity toexperience the surroundings as a partof nature and not as a noisy intruder.
The essential snow shoe.
This traditional, silent model from Iverson, located in the snow filled UpperPeninsula of Michigan, is a goodapproximationof the archetypal snowshoe and is still used in Canada and theUSA today. The only difference is thecovering which is coated with syntheticresin to prolong the life of the shoe. Theshoe itself has a broad base, suiting itwell for extensive, hilly terrain with deepsnow. The rear of the shoe is roundedto provide manoeuvrability in scrubfilled terrain. The frame is made oftough, elastic white ash from the hardwoodforests of Michigan, Wisconsinand Minnesota.
