    General Information

    Telling time using sunlight.

The sun dial is not just a means for telling time. It’s also good for conveying and understanding the principle behind it. For instance, a sun dial will always indicate the so-called true local time, which differs from Central European Time. The further west one is from the 15th degree of longitude, the further behind is the sun dial. This and other deviations are clearly explained in the manual.

Professionally inquisitive. Toys made by Naseweiss.

The wooden toys from Naseweiss in Germany combine the joy in playing with the opportunity to learn something about principles and ideas from nature, technology and culture. From the physical principles of the pulsed motor, to a simple magnifying glass, or an optical microscope, or a sun dial. Those kinds of toys make possible getting more deeply involved with nature and the environment, but still leave room for your own ideas and discoveries. They are creative play in action.

    Who wound the clock?

There is nothing to wind on this clock, but the compass needle turns, driven by the magnetic field of the Earth. With the aid of the compass the sun dial can be adjusted in order to tell the time and understand the principle behind it. However one must bear in mind that sun dials always tell the true local time which will differ from Central European Time according to location. The further west one is from the 15th degree of longitude, the further behind is the sun dial. In addition there are deviations in the north and south because the rays of the sun do not impinge on the ground at the same angle everywhere. Our sun dial is calculated for 51° of latitude, corresponding roughly to the middle of Germany (Cologne and Dresden are at this latitude), so that the deviation is only minimal. During the summer an hour has to be added.
