White Polled Heath Woven Carpet
Carpet hand woven with white polled heath wool.
One of the last great herds of white polled heath in Germany inhabits the Diepholz upland moors near Bremen, where they are kept for habitat management. The wool of the primitive breed with its coarse outer wool and extremely fine underwool is the perfect raw material for rugged wool products with a long life, like carpets. The wool is free of treatment agents and agents for pest control.
Carpets made of German white polled heath.
We have these carpets woven by hand from white polled heath wool in north Hesse. The washed wool is combed without any additional equipment and spun to a finger thick "Lunte" (fuse) consisting of 15 twined threads (Nm 5/2) which are twisted into a "Seele" (soul) of pure linen. The fuse is mechanically tumbled and felted and then woven into an extremely durable carpet with an impressive material weight of 2.6 kg/m². The handwoven pure virgin wool carpets are exceedingly functional: abrasion resistant, lint-free because of the tumbling and felting of the lunte and water and dirt repellant, which makes them easy to maintain. They’re also usable on both sides, and it’s recommended to turn them over now and again.
