Wire basket apple picker. The harvester’s elongated arm
Apple pickers like this one, with wire receptacles often were shaped like richly decorated baskets or vases, first appeared in France around 1750. This picking basket has a simple shape and is made from light but very stable steel wire. The basket is shaped entirely according to function: the opening of the basket high terminates in hooks, with which the apples are „fished “ and then pulled from the tree. Since the basket is mounted in line with the handle (not at an angle), the elongated tool is much easier to aim and maneuver because you can keep your arms closer to your body, saving exertion and energy. We recommend lining the basket with a piece of cloth, as was customary in the past, in order to protect the harvested fruit.
The apple picker comes with a 1.5 meter long handle. If a longer one is needed, simply loosen the clamp beneath the basket and install a longer handle.
