General Information

Thinking ahead. Seeds for the coming season

An advent calendar that thinks beyond December 24th. Behind every little door is a small portion of seeds in a bag - along with the prospect of a colorful, abundantly blossomed and fruit-filled self-catering season, during which you can harvest and prepare vegetables and herbs from your own garden. First of all, all you need is some additional sowing soil and space on a sunny windowsill. There is, for example, the winter lettuce 'Roter Butterhäuptl', which produces tender, crisp, dark red to almost brown-colored heads late in the year and can also be harvested as cut lettuce. The kale 'Altmärker Braunkohl' is an old brown cabbage variety with a broad color spectrum from green to red and purple and is sown until June. Its harvest time begins with the first fall frosts and lasts until late winter. In spring, sorrel leaves and the kohlrabi variety 'Superschmelz' enrich the fresh selection on the plate. And because a summer without tomatoes, basil, chili, peppers and eggplants is possible but pointless, these classic Mediterranean vegetables are also included in the seed selection. Not forgetting cucumber, borage, Asian lettuce and lettuce picks, honeydew melon ... It's a good thing that you - or the recipient - can also grow many of these in raised beds, balcony boxes or containers.

Our supplier Saat & Gut obtains the seeds from Culinaris in Göttingen, one of the most renowned organic seed companies in Germany. The varieties are all Demeter-certified and, of course, seed-resistant, making them suitable for seed harvesting and replanting in future seasons. The climate in the Göttingen area is extremely warm and dry in summer. Over time, Culinaris has selected its range of varieties precisely for these conditions, resulting in plants that can cope well with heat and longer dry periods. How practical: the colorful printed box of our self-catering Advent calendar even contains a pulp seed tray with 24 wells that can be used for sowing at the start of the season. Short sowing instructions are printed on the Advent calendar doors.
