That the mat is so robust, it owes the traditional Sardinian weaving technique "pipiones", in which the raised patterns are created by lush, dense loops. This uses a weaving method with three thread systems - a four-ply in the ground warp, a loop consisting of 18 twisted yarns, and a particularly strong eight-ply in the weft - not unlike the epinglé technique used for velvet. Traditionally, it is used to weave firm carpets made of wool; however, Sardinian weavers use soft cotton to make their bath and shower rugs. With the understated color scheme, the rugs are also suitable for the bedroom.
