The classic beehive, also known by beekeepers as a "hive" or "inverted hive", is a development of humans, not honey bees. Wild bees do not need such dwellings; most species do not even form colonies, but live solitary lives. They colonize cavities in the ground or in walls and rocks, between dead wood or in stems, tree trunks and the like. However, the hive of a honey bee colony cared for by a beekeeper has become so engraved in the collective imagination that the beehive is inevitably associated with every bee colony collecting nectar and pollen.

The beehive candle is an aesthetic reminiscence of the honey bee and its industrious service to mankind.
