About the person: Maria Sibylla Merian is regarded today as a pioneer in the field of insect research. Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1647, she was one of the first to systematically observe insects, especially caterpillars and butterflies. She shed light on a field of research that had previously received little attention, as she was able to prove the symbiotic relationship between many butterfly caterpillars and their food plants. Through her work, Merian made the specialized knowledge about the life cycle of butterflies - the metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult butterfly - known to a broad public. The fact that one of her most important works, "Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennahrung", published in two volumes in 1679 and 1683, was published in German is said to have been a thorn in the side of many of her male research colleagues. Even more unusual for the time was the fact that she undertook a research trip from Amsterdam, where she lived in later years, to Dutch Guiana and the former Dutch colony of Surinam without a male companion. The resulting collection of copperplate engravings and textual notes was published in 1705 under the title "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium".
