A gymnastics mat made of leather? What initially seemed unusual quickly convinced us as an environmentally friendly and extremely pleasant alternative to plastic mats. Their suede surface offers advantages in terms of grip and, above all, non-slip properties, even compared to mats made from other natural materials such as cotton or sheep's wool.
Our leather specialist Hack in Cologne manufactures the gymnastics mat from cowhide suede, which is applied to a shock-absorbing carrier material made of cellular rubber. This results in a generous material thickness of 7 mm in total, which ensures optimum cushioning. This makes the mat suitable for dynamic exercises as well as those in which postures or stretching positions are held for a long time.
The suede has a good grip and offers support in all positions. The underside of the mat is made of rubber and is non-slip on any surface so that you can perform your stretching and gymnastics exercises anywhere. You won't want to stop, because the feeling of standing barefoot on the soft, even velvety leather is simply wonderful.

As with all things made of good leather, this leather exercise mat will develop the beautiful patina typical of the material with time and use. Each unit will leave its mark on the leather surface, which not only makes your mat unmistakable, but also provides visible information about the frequency of use. The cowhide suede used is mineral-tanned and comes in a hard-wearing quality with a thickness of 2.3 mm. The surface is not further treated, but moisture can hardly harm the leather mat: Simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth after your exercise session.
For the 190 × 65 cm gymnastics mat, the leather is applied to the natural rubber in four individual cuts and also sewn neatly at the edges. The two leather straps sewn into one narrow side secure the rolled-up mat for transportation. So, off to your next training session!

Christoph Hack, fine bag maker and founder of Hack Lederware, has been dealing with very different leathers for decades, gaining a wealth of experience that he incorporates into the design of his leather goods. For us, he works exclusively with leather with natural surfaces from Germany, Italy and Scandinavia, but also with similar materials full of character such as canvas or pure wool felt.
