General Information
♫ Hovering high above, rejoicing ...
... the choir of angels: whether as heralds of the good news, as bearers of joyful tidings or as a choir cheering the birth, angels belong to the birth of Christ like love, peace and hope belong to the festivities. And so Christmas decorations without angels - to paraphrase Loriot - are possible, but pointless. This artistically decorated angel, blown into shape, borrows its design from the boyish cherubs we know from Raphael's "Sistine Madonna", for example: small wings, golden curly hair and a smile on a red-cheeked chubby face. This decorative angel glitters from the Christmas tree and Advent wreath or from the window garland with white mica that hints at the wings and dusts the golden hair.
These glass ornaments are handcrafted using traditional Thuringian glassblowing techniques: each angel is carefully hand-mirrored from the inside using Liebig's silvering process to give it the greatest possible radiance (silver reflects the incident light particularly effectively). After drying, the glass angel is painted by hand, decorated with the mica and finally fitted with the classic metal hat with hanger. This way, if you arrange several angels in a tree, wreath or window, you can hum along as you decorate: ... joyfully join in with the angels' cheer. ♫
Pure Matter of Form. Christmas tree ornaments between handicraft and mass production
The glassblowers of Lauscha used to call the figurative glass ornaments, which were blown into two-part negative molds "before the lamp", a matter of form. Today, as then, the lamp is the gas burner, whose flame keeps the glass viscous and malleable. And the molds that are used are also the same as 100 or 150 years ago. They are usually made of ceramic and must be handled with care, because in order to preserve them - and not overheat them in use - the molds must be gently cooled down again at regular intervals. Thus, no more than 150 figures or ornaments can be blown in one go. Only the starting material is different than in the past, because instead of glass tubes drawn specifically for this purpose, prefabricated flasks made of colorless soda-lime glass are now used.
