General Information

Nordland sheepskin. It couldn't be softer

This coat comes from Nordland sheep from England or Scandinavia. Naturally robust and frugal, the animals, whose relatives are also known as Icelandic or Greenland sheep depending on where they live, have adapted perfectly to the harsh, cold climate there. Their wool fleece is very dense and their hair is significantly longer than that of many other Nordic short-tailed sheep - and incredibly silky-soft. Their coat is black or white, sometimes with black and white patches and sometimes mottled. Another special feature of this sheep breed (insignificant for our furs, but still very interesting): Within a flock, there is the so-called leader sheep, which is able to lead the flock through dangerous terrain thanks to its predisposition or inherited ability. What is important for our furs, however, is that the animals are not kept for the purpose of producing fur, but as they have been for thousands of years as a source of wool, milk and meat. The Nordland sheep can live in their natural life cycle and are therefore only slaughtered at certain times. Their fur is neither bleached nor dyed after tanning and retains its natural color. The wool fleece also retains its natural length of around 15 centimetres and - and here we have to express our enthusiasm once again - its incomparably silky-soft feel. Each animal has its own individual coloring and size, the fleeces are sorted by color, but the dimensions vary slightly.

We obtain the Nordlandschnucken furs from the fur specialist Heitmann Felle, a traditional company in the Lüneburg Heath, which was founded in 1820 and is still family-run today, now in its sixth generation. Although the fur of the Nordland sheep is relatively robust, it is more sensitive to heavy use than a wool sheepskin, for example. The Nordland sheepskin will therefore show its long-term use as a seat base over time. The fur is very easy to care for: occasional shaking out in the fresh air and careful brushing are sufficient. Please note, however, that the Nordland sheepskin should not be washed or exposed to moisture due to its tannin.
