General Information

Pen and pencil for traveling

The idea of storing tools and other useful or valuable items in a leather roll probably came to man when he began to tan animal skins and use them for tents, clothing and bags. For chefs and hairdressers in particular, the leather roll has proven its worth as a protective storage and transport container to this day, firstly because leather is a durable, hard-wearing material that protects valuable knives and scissors. On the other hand, it is pleasant to the touch, supple and robust enough to withstand the sharp instruments.

For fountain pens and the like, however, the leather can be a little finer. Sonnenleder therefore uses supple, vegetable pit-tanned cowhide for this pen roll. There is space for six slim writing instruments. Rubber loops keep them neatly in place, small pockets prevent them from slipping out and a leather flap protects the fine tips of fountain pens, colored pencils or pencils so that you can take your writing tools with you wherever you go for sharp criticism, pointed formulations and polished texts. Of course, brushes and other tools worth protecting up to 17 centimetres in length and 0.5 centimetres in diameter also fit inside. The pencil roll is closed with two leather straps.

Leather from the pit. Red tanned

Sonnenleder in Bodman-Ludwigshafen on Lake Constance stands for a consistently functional, pure design. The meticulously working company still uses the traditional method of leather production: vegetable pit tanning. Only hides from southern German cattle are used for this. The tanning agents used contain mainly decoctions of bark, roots and fruit. In twelve pits with slightly increasing concentrations of tanning broth, they convert the protein fibers of the cattle hides into leather fibers over a period of six to twelve weeks.
After tanning, the hides are air-dried and greased in a lubrication barrel according to a well-guarded recipe. Undyed, the finished leather has a characteristic, slightly light brown-reddish hue, which also gave the leather the name "red-tanned" and which varies from batch to batch. Use, sun and rain change the color tone, and over time a natural protection forms, the patina, which gives the leather an unmistakable appearance. The leather dyed in the barrel also acquires a shiny patina with use.
