General Information
These color studies by Anni Albers were created between 1967 and 1973 as designs for various wall hangings. The multifaceted play of colored triangles reflects the tension between order and chaos in natural crystalline structures. At the same time, they thematize Anni's interest in Mexican culture. Inspired by her numerous visits to Mexico and her fascination with Mesoamerican forms, she collected pre-Columbian artifacts and textiles, for example. These prints were created in close collaboration with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation to honor the legacy of one of the most influential figures of 20th century modernism. Intensive efforts were made to reproduce the colors, design and appearance of the original as accurately as possible during the reproduction process. Hence the small stains and inclusions on the motif, which were deliberately retained to preserve the authenticity of the original artwork.
Anni Albers
Anni Albers is one of the most influential textile designers of the 20th century. Like her husband Josef Albers, she studied and taught at the Bauhaus. She headed the weaving class there for a time. After the National Socialists seized power in Germany in 1933, the couple emigrated to the USA. Anni continued the work she had begun in Germany and was one of the pioneers of modern industrial weaving. In addition to her handcrafted oeuvre, she created numerous abstract graphics and pattern designs for industrially produced fabrics.
