General Information
Sprouts in a jar. Grow your own "fresh sprouts"
Crunchy, refreshing, hot or spicy: fresh sprouts add variety to a balanced diet. And they are easy to grow yourself. All you need is seeds - radish, broccoli, rocket and garden cress seeds are particularly suitable, but mustard, mung beans, buckwheat and fenugreek also grow quickly into small sprouts - and a sprout jar that can be placed safely for draining. Because the most important thing when growing sprouts is to water them thoroughly and allow them to drain well.
Our set consists of a sprout jar with a capacity of one liter and a matching stainless steel screw-on lid, which is fitted with a rubber sealing ring and an inserted stainless steel sieve. The jar can be set up at an angle - with the lid facing downwards - in the matching stainless steel wire rack. This allows the water to drain optimally through the sieve in the lid. The stainless steel tray underneath catches any remaining dripping water. There is a large selection of suitable seeds - we don't want to get ahead of ourselves in this respect - so the set does not contain any seeds. After all, you know your personal taste best and can therefore select the varieties for your sprout seeds accordingly.
Step by step to a mini sprout garden
Rinse the seeds and jar with clear water before use. Then place one to two tablespoons of seeds in the sprout jar, pour 50-75 ml of water over them and leave to soak overnight. The next day, drain the water through the sieve lid. Now rinse the seeds once or twice with fresh water, drain and place the jar upside down in the stand so that the remaining water can run off.
The following applies during the germination period: For dark sprouts (e.g. pulses), cover the sprouting jar with a cloth for the first two to three days. Light sprouts (e.g. alfalfa or cress), on the other hand, like a bright spot without direct sunlight. Both types of seeds should be rinsed with fresh water two to three times a day over the next few days and the sprouting jar should then be leaned back into the stand at an angle - this prevents waterlogging, the seedlings can drip off and "breathe" through the opening in the lid. After a few days to about two weeks (depending on the variety), the sprouts can be harvested. To do this, wash the sprouts thoroughly under running water or soak them briefly in water with a little apple cider vinegar, then put them in a large sieve and place in a bowl of water. The ungerminated seeds and the superfluous seed pods will now sink to the bottom and remain in the water. The sprouts should be lifted out, put through a few rounds in the salad spinner and then left to air dry for around 30 minutes. Any residual moisture can be gently dabbed off with a kitchen towel or paper towel.
Sprouts taste best fresh. (They can be stored in the fridge for a short time - in an airtight container together with kitchen paper to protect them from moisture - or frozen. To do this, place the thoroughly washed and carefully dried sprouts loosely on a tray, pre-freeze and transfer to freezer bags or tins). They taste great on their own on a sandwich or in herb quark. As a contrasting eye-catcher, they add a fresh finishing touch to any sandwich or cheese platter. And as an ingredient, either fresh or briefly steamed, the sprouts are excellent in salads or as a topping on soups, pasta or pizza. Have we whetted your appetite? Then get started and let sprouts sprout.
Storage in a jar. New and durable thinking
In the beginning, before the Pearl Jars brand was founded in 2015, there was a simple idea: to create beautiful and durable storage solutions for the kitchen - the living center of everyday life. In Lisbon, an environment where creativity and responsibility go hand in hand, storage jars are now being created that not only want to look beautiful, but also simplify everyday life and at the same time make a contribution against the ever-growing flood of disposable packaging. The man behind Pearl Jars, the storage, preserving and sprouting jars from Portugal, is Lukas Boettger, who was born in Germany and grew up in Portugal. With his brand, he develops products that enrich everyday life, are of high quality and at the same time fit in with a more conscious lifestyle.
Pearl Jars rethinks classic storage containers, but relies on tried and tested materials such as glass and stainless steel - durable and completely safe in contact with food. Each product can be completely dismantled for easy cleaning and reuse. Designed and made for long-term use, all parts of the Pearl Jars can be easily separated and recycled. But first, of course, the jars need to be filled: Whether with home-grown sprouts, home-created plum compote or home-fermented vegetables, the Pearl Jars invite you to create your own supplies that are exactly to your taste.
