This device from Finland combines the technology of the wedge with that of the drop hammer to create a superior splitting tool. A solid piston runs in a cylinder with a forged splitting wedge. The wedge is placed where the log is to be split. One hand grips the cylinder, the other hand pulls the piston out fully and drops it; with a stroke of 50 cm and its own weight of approx. 3.5 kg, it drives the wedge into the wood (which should be well dried) and splits it reliably. This solves several problems at the same time: Aiming is no longer necessary because the "axe" head is placed exactly where the log is to be split. The overhead lunge is no longer necessary because it is replaced by pulling up the butt to save energy. And finally: the risk of injury is minimized as the entire movement sequence is under control at all times.
